Experiencing a Torturous Awaiting: Penelope in Munich, an Gabriel Fauré Composition
In the heart of Munich, at the Prinzregententheater, the production of Gabriel Fauré's opera "Pénélope" is a second premiere contribution to this year's Munich Opera Festival. This powerful and clever chamber musical, directed by Andrea Breth, offers a fresh take on a timeless story.
Set in a palace with partitioned chambers, the production revolves around Trojan hero Odysseus, his waiting wife Penelope, her importunate suitors, and his liberating homecoming. The aged Penelope is held captive in the palace by her maids, servants, and suitors, while the hopeful young character Eumeé, played by Thomas Mole, waits for Odysseus's return.
The story unfolds with Victoria Karkacheva portraying the admirable title heroine Penelope with a dark noble soprano. She faithfully waits for her husband, Odysseus, for twenty years during his long absence after the Trojan War. Brandon Jovanovich, in a tenor delight, plays a mild Ulisse in Chekhov costume, returning home in disguise.
The production features a baritonal counterpart for Thomas Mole's character, and Rinat Shaham brings the wise nurse to life. The female archer, played by Daniela Maier, plays a significant role, especially in the scene where Odysseus slaughters the suitors. Odysseus appears in a bright summer suit with a double, adding an air of mystery to the production.
The production is an outsider piece, marking Andrea Breth's first Munich opera directing work. Susanna Mälkki, conducting the opera, brings Gabriel Fauré's opera, lying between Debussy and Wagner, to light. She leads the Bavarian State Orchestra and the vocal ensemble "LauschWerk" in a performance that highlights themes of love, fidelity, and the emotional dynamics between the reunited couple.
