Emotions on a Pride Parade

Last summer's World Pride in Washington D.C. found me slathered in glitter, feeling a whirlwind of emotions - joy, grief, rage, love, and pride. As I stood among thousands, witnessing the power and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, I couldn't help but wonder if the authorities, with their stonewalling and misguided policies, felt the same intensity.

By the side, the political machine was gearing up, aiming its rhetorical cannons at the LGBTQ+ community - 'agendas,' 'ideologies,' especially trans and non-binary individuals. Consequently, we gathered - in fury, hope, and resentment - to draw attention to the ongoing state-sponsored violence faced by our community. And yet, as they marched, we celebrated - in love, joy, and pride - to nourish, honor, and affirm each other.

Emotions and Law: On a Journey of Self-Discovery

It's not an American problem; it's a global issue. LGBTQ+ folks have suffered censorship, deportation, healthcare denial, criminalization, and more in various nations. My new book, Soaking in the Rainbow Wave: Navigating Emotions and Law in a Colorful Universe, delves into how emotions, much like the ones I experienced at World Pride, aid us in understanding, critiquing, and pursuing righteous legal battles that make the world a better place for the LGBTQ+ community.

I zero in on 'progressive' countries like the UK, Australia, and the USA, exploring how emotions - both passionate and ambivalent - drive the legal debates that seek to address the challenges faced by our community within these borders.

Transitions and Anxieties

Take the UK and the USA as examples. Trans and non-binary individuals have been erased by laws meant to safeguard single-sex spaces. These laws, cloaked in the cloak of social anxieties, create a hostile environment that marginalizes trans folks from various aspects of public life. Scared about fiction partially based on fact, these laws enforce the fears and anxieties of a select faction while suppressing the very real anxieties faced by trans people.

Recent decisions by the UK Supreme Court allow us a disheartening peek into this state of anxieties. The Court's definition of sex based on "biological" terms only stokes the fires, furthering a climate of uncertainty. With questions about bathroom usage, identity erasure, and transphobic scrutiny looming, it's time to address these burning issues head-on.

Religious Resentments

Where prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity exists, legislatures and courts have churned out responses colored with resentment over perceived religious freedoms being infringed upon. Take the infamous case of the Colorado website owner who felt "compelled" to endorse same-sex weddings by offering her services to a same-sex couple. The Supreme Court sided with her, seemingly oblivious to the pain and humiliation faced by same-sex couples in the face of widespread homophobia.

Beyond Conflict: Solidarity and Connection

Rather than viewing conflicts over LGBTQ+ rights as inherently damaging, understanding the anxieties, fears, and resentments that underpin legal debates could empower us to forge connection between groups with differing positionalities. Feminists, for one, have documented how male violence against women is systemic and pervasive. Addressing this problem critically and strategically can pave the way for advocacy rooted in the safety and well-being of all women, including trans women.

Religious LGBTQ+ folks, too, have raised their voices against the erasure they've experienced within religious institutions and queer spaces that regard faith as antithetical to being LGBTQ+. By acknowledging and addressing the feelings of resentment that arise from this, we may find a means to embrace being LGBTQ+ as an essential facet of religious freedom.

Embracing the Wave: A Call to Action

Politicians across the globe are exploiting homophobic and transphobic politics, weaving them into a tapestry of misogyny, racism, and ableism. It is vital that we confront these toxic emotions at personal, interpersonal, and institutional levels if we are to resist authoritarianism and cultivate a world in which everyone can thrive.
