Experienced Indian Diplomat Taranjit Sandhu Assumes Key Position in US-India Forum
Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a seasoned Indian diplomat, has recently been appointed to key roles within the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). Following a 35-year diplomatic career, Ambassador Sandhu served as India's Ambassador to the United States until his retirement in February 2024.
During his tenure in Washington, Ambassador Sandhu played a pivotal role in organizing events such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2014 address at Madison Square Garden, President Donald Trump's 2020 visit to India, and the 2024 state visit of PM Modi to Washington. His extensive experience and expertise will now be leveraged to guide USISPF's strategic geopolitical initiatives.
In his new roles as Advisor to the Board and Chairman of the USISPF Geopolitical Institute, Ambassador Sandhu will offer strategic insights on regional initiatives like the Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor (IMEC) and the I2U2 grouping, both of which gained significant momentum during his tenure in Washington. He will also focus on the Indo-Pacific region and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), an informal strategic dialogue between the United States, India, Japan, and Australia.
Mukesh Aghi, President and CEO of USISPF, praised Ambassador Sandhu, stating that he is one of the brightest minds sent by New Delhi to Washington, with a unique understanding of US-India relations. Ambassador Sandhu expressed his delight at joining USISPF as Chairman of its Geopolitical Institute, stating that he looks forward to helping shape USISPF's approach to evolving geopolitical dynamics, particularly in the Indo-Pacific.
The India-US COMPACT, which focuses on defence, energy, trade, and technology, was highlighted by Ambassador Sandhu as an example of the renewed vigour brought to the India-US partnership by Prime Minister Modi and President Trump. His focus areas in his new roles will also include defence cooperation, vaccine diplomacy, critical and emerging technologies, and energy partnerships.
Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu's association with USISPF is not new, as he worked closely with the Forum during his tenure as India's Ambassador to the US from 2020 to 2024. His new role as Chair of the Geopolitical Institute marks a new avatar in his association with USISPF.
