"Experience of Delight"
Celebrating the "Joy Days" in Neuss
Stepping into the historic courtyard behind the Neuss County House, you're greeted by the sights and sounds of tradition that the city of Neuss is renowned for. Each year, on the Friday following the Bürger-Schützenfest, around 350 distinguished guests gather to partake in the "Days of Joy." This inclusive event took place on August 23 and 24, 20XX.
This year, the Schützenfest has a special King at its helm: Christoph II (Heusgen), a distinguished figure who currently heads the Munich Security Conference, advises the EU’s High Command, and served as an advisor to the Chancellor during her tenure. A local boy at heart, Christoph II detailed his journey from leaving his hometown in 1973 to his present-day role as a defender of Neuss' autonomy, which was threatened during the 1975 municipal reform by Düsseldorf's attempt to annex Neuss. Thankfully, Neuss became one of the centers of the new Rhein-Kreis, thwarting Düsseldorf's plans. A small incident arose when the Edelknabe King Samuel Appelfeller, present at the celebration, took ill and collapsed. However, the crowd rallied to ensure his safe exit and recovery. Christoph II briefly paused to allow music to entertain the crowd before resuming his lively speech.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Landrat Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke, who acknowledged the current Schützenking, the committee of the Neuss Bürger-Schützen-Verein, and numerous representatives from tradition, business, politics, and society. He underscored the importance of tradition for community welfare, especially in today's world, and emphasized that the Schützen tradition contributes significantly to building bridges, fostering ongoing exchange, and promoting unity.
The Landrat also emphasized the impact of Christoph II, a diplomat who has represented Neuss worldwide, maintaining a strong connection to his homeland and serving as an ambassador for Neuss and the Rhein-Kreis. The Landrat presented Christoph II with a gift certificate for a flight over the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
Petrauschke also highlighted the district's upcoming 50th anniversary and acknowledged the economic and social strength of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, affirming that community collaboration has the power to propel the district to new heights. The reception was accompanied by the music club "Frohsinn Norf," offering cooled drinks, light refreshments, and traditional gingerbread hearts featuring the royal couple and the emblem of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, along with roses for the ladies.
Police officers, firefighters, and rescue workers were lauded for their efforts in making the shooting festival a success. Among the esteemed guests were Members of the German Parliament Hermann Gröhe and Ansgar Heveling, Members of the State Parliament Dr. Jörg Geerlings, Heike Troles, and Simon Rock, the Mayor of Neuss Reiner Breuer, various representatives from the district's municipalities, deputy district administrators Katharina Reinhold, Christina Borggräfe, and Angela Stein-Ulrich, and numerous representatives from politics, business, and society from the region. Former royal couples, corps leaders, and representatives from shooting clubs and societies from the entire district area were also in attendance.
