Bad Omens, the American metalcore band fronted by Noah Sebastian, have released a new single titled "Specter" and are hinting at a significant change in their musical direction. In an interview with Metal Hammer earlier this year, Sebastian opened up about the new music and his intentions to create music that feels true to him and not forced.

Sebastian revealed that the upcoming music from Bad Omens will reflect a maturation of their sound, presenting a more atmospheric, cinematic, and emotional direction. He described feeling "more like a ghost" and alluded to a new phase for the band that closes the chapter on their previous The Death of Peace of Mind / Concrete Jungle era, opening a "new door" with this moody and haunting single.

In the interview, Sebastian also expressed his doubts about continuing to play heavy, core-based music as he gets older. He mentioned that other genres also have numerous subgenres like metal and pointed out that metalheads tend to categorize anything non-metal as pop or EDM. However, he clarified that his band's new music is not going to be a bubblegum pop record.

The video for "Specter," which Sebastian co-directed, supports this artistic and cinematic shift, signaling "a new era" for Bad Omens after their previous success. The video features Ryan Hurst, an actor known for his roles in Sons Of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. Hurst plays an authority figure in the video, trying to conduct an interview with a young boy who is hiding beneath a white bedsheet.

The lyrics in "Specter," including lines like "Do you feel love? I know I don’t with no one to hold," emphasize introspection and emotional depth. Another line sung by Sebastian in the song is "Oh I'm changing, and I feel more like a ghost." The chorus pivots on the lyric "Do you feel love? I know I don't with no one to hold."

Bad Omens teased the release of "Specter" on their social media pages earlier this week. The new single is the first brand new music released by the band since 2022's The Death of Peace of Mind album. The album has accumulated over 2.7 billion streams globally.

Despite not providing specific details about the sound or release date of the new music, Sebastian stated that his work-in-progress feels true to the voice in his head and whatever it's feeling at the moment. He emphasized his intention to create music that feels true to him and not forced, signaling a promising future for Bad Omens and their fans.
