Adaventure of a Lifetime: 430Km Paddleboard Expedition for a Cause - Day & Night on the Weser
Charitable Expedition Along the Weser: A 24-Hour Journey in Day and Night - Expeditions Serving a Noble Cause: 24-Hour Voyage on the River Weser
Hey there!
An ambitious team of four daredevils are embarking on an epic endeavor: a whopping 430 kilometers Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) journey from Hann. Münden (in the district of Göttingen) to Bremerhaven, all while raising funds for the Löwenzahn children's hospice. They call themselves the Weser4Lions, and they aim to conquer this distance in a mind-boggling 100 hours, with day and night shifts on the waters of the mighty Weser.
Catch some Z's on the go
"We make do with whatever sleep we can grab on the water," Axel Bischof, one of the adventurers, tells the German Press Agency amid the historic Hameln weir. Last night was a chilly one, but "it was still a blast because we got to witness a beautiful sunrise," he shares. Safety precautions are of the utmost importance to the team. Life jackets are worn at all times, and sleeping teammates are securely fastened to the board, ensuring a secure rest during the nighttime shifts.
Paddling lessons at the locks
"Seven locks along the route require us to hoist the mammoth SUP out of the water for a quick carry. Just like we're doing here in Hameln," Bischof explains. These brief pauses provide opportunities to fuel up, as they can be joined by support vehicles for on-board food delivery. "They'll be hollered at, and we'll have food delivered right to our trusty board," Bischof shares. They've got water, energy bars, and more onboard to keep their energy levels up.
An expedition for the greater good
"We're all about supporting noble projects," participant Ulf Schwarz says, talking about the good-natured adventure. "We're paddling for Löwenzahn Children's Hospice in Syke because we firmly believe that hospice work is essential," he explains. All hospices across Germany are doing outstanding work, Schwarz remarks.
The challenges of an aquatic marathon
According to Schwarz, the main obstacles involve the frigid nights and the unpredictable wind and weather. "Headwinds are a beast, and dealing with the tides once we hit Bremen will be interesting - six hours pushing us along, and another six fighting against the North Sea waves," he anticipates with a mix of excitement and apprehension.
The Weser4Lions kicked off their challenge mid-week and hoped to make it to the sea coast by Sunday afternoon[1][2][5].
