Expediting Recognition for LGBT Service Members by Government Agencies

The UK Government has announced the launch of a Financial Recognition Scheme for LGBT military personnel who faced dismissal, discharge, or mistreatment due to their sexuality while serving between 1967 and 2000. This scheme aims to acknowledge and compensate these individuals for the discrimination and sacrifices they endured during their service.

Key Details of the Scheme

The Financial Recognition Scheme provides financial support to affected veterans as a form of recognition for the injustices they faced. Beyond financial compensation, the scheme can also include restoration of rank, official letters of apology, and other acknowledgments to formally recognize the injustices faced by LGBT veterans.

The scheme was launched in December 2021 and is part of a wider commitment to renew the nation's contract with those who have served. Efforts have been made to accelerate payments, especially prioritizing elderly veterans and those with serious health conditions, by increasing staff resources, implementing automated payment systems, and doubling panel reviews for applications.

Application Process

Veterans affected by the ban, i.e., those who served during the 1967–2000 period and believe they were dismissed or mistreated due to their LGBT status, are urged to apply via the official GOV.UK portal specifically dedicated to the Veterans of the LGBT Ban: Financial Recognition Scheme. The Government provides guidance and support for applicants on the GOV.UK website to help them understand eligibility and the application process.

Government Commitment

The scheme follows recommendations from the LGBT Veterans Independent Review, chaired by Lord Etherton KC, which examined the impact of the ban and the consequences on veterans’ lives. It aligns with the UK Government's broader Veterans Strategy and its commitment to invest in the Armed Forces, demonstrated by plans to increase defence spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027.

Minister for Veterans and People, Al Carns MP, has emphasized the Government’s deep regret for past treatment and the ongoing commitment to right historic wrongs through this scheme. Affected veterans can find more information and apply by visiting the Veterans of the LGBT Ban: Financial Recognition Scheme page on GOV.UK.

The expanded team will focus on expediting the creation of applicant case files and processing of applications. The Government's efforts are aimed at ensuring veterans receive timely recognition for past injustices.
