Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in Uttarakhand: A Crisis Unfolds
Uttarakhand, a mountainous region in northern India, is currently battling heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding that has caused widespread destruction. The Badrinath National Highway has been blocked at several points due to landslides and mudslides, making rescue efforts challenging.
The IMD (India Meteorological Department) has issued an orange alert in several regions, including Uttarkashi, Nainital, Chamoli, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Tehri, Haridwar, and Pithorgarh. The heavy rainfall has led to the Alaknanda River overflowing in Chamoli and Rudraprayag, causing Lord Shiva's statue on the banks of the river in Rudraprayag to be submerged.
The worsening weather and torrential rainfall are not only triggering landslides and mudslides but also causing flood-like situations. Numerous vehicles have been washed away, and the water levels have risen significantly, causing flooding in various areas.
The city of Dehradun is also experiencing heavy rainfall, with the weather department advising residents to take caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow traffic advisories. A car has been reported trapped under debris in the Tehri Garhwal district due to landslides.
The heavy rainfall is a result of a combination of factors, including a depression in India, a monsoon trough, and a recent western disturbance. Climate change is also believed to be a contributing factor, as it increases the intensity and frequency of such events in Uttarakhand.
Residents are advised to stay updated with weather-related information, avoid going near water bodies, keep themselves in a safer place, move livestock to a safer place, and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools in the state have been closed due to the heavy rainfall and subsequent chaos.
The ground situation in Dharali and Harsil remains extremely critical, making rescue efforts harder. The IMD predicts that the heavy rainfall will continue till August 10, 2025, warning of more rain ahead in Uttarakhand.
