Expectant remarks from Fran Brown on Syracuse quarterbacks following scrimmage: Anticipating a significant advancement
In a recent development, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown has named redshirt junior Steve Angeli as the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Angeli, a transfer from Notre Dame, emerged as the favourite contender after a close competition with Rickie Collins, another transfer, from LSU.
Standing at 6'3" and weighing 210 pounds, Angeli brings experience to the table, having played in 21 games at Notre Dame. His strongest performance came in the 2023 Sun Bowl, where he started and threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns.
Collins, despite being the main competitor for the starting role, was ultimately edged out by Angeli. The competition between the two was described by coach Brown as close, with Angeli holding a slight edge (51-49) over Collins.
Coach Brown expressed hope that both Angeli and Collins will take significant strides forward in the upcoming season. The specific nature of these steps was not specified.
The announcement came following Syracuse's first scrimmage over the weekend, which was held in Syracuse, N.Y. Both Angeli and Collins participated in the scrimmage.
Meanwhile, the Orange's focus on defensive improvement is fueled by two 4th-down failures. Elsewhere, a wide receiver prospect for Syracuse football suffered a leg fracture, with a source comparing him to Wes Welker in terms of potential.
In other news, former Syracuse star David Reese explained the reason for his eighth year of eligibility. Several Syracuse alums also had notable performances in NFL preseason games.
As the season approaches, the competition for the starting quarterback position remains close, with both Angeli and Collins continuing to push each other.
