Pushing for Rail Expansion in the Rhineland: IHK's Plea to the Federal Government

- Expansion of rail network advocated in North Rhine-Westphalia by IHK

Hey there! Let's talk about an interesting topic that's been making waves in the Rhineland. The Chambers of Industry and Commerce (or IHK) in this region are urging the new federal government to dramatically expand rail infrastructure for goods transport in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Why's that, you ask?

Gregor Berghausen, CEO of IHK Düsseldorf, recently stated at a state press conference that this expansion is crucial to prevent goods traffic from clogging the roads and instead move it onto the rails. Sounds sensible, right? Well, it turns out the federal goods forecasts have been underestimating the volume of goods transported from Zeebrugge ports (Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam) through the Rhineland.

These oversights might be due to the federal government favoring North German seaports, which isn't great news for the economic development of the Rhineland. To make matters worse, certain key corridors like Aachen – Mönchengladbach – Neuss – Düsseldorf, Aachen – Cologne – Bonn – Rhein-Sieg district, Venlo – Viersen – Krefeld – Duisburg, and Emmerich – Duisburg are already overburdened.

So, what's the solution? According to Berghausen, the IHKs in the Rhineland are asking the federal government to make corrections to the traffic forecasts. Close cooperation with Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as quick implementation of planned projects, is also essential. The state of many bridges is cause for concern, as they're in poor condition.

Sascha Odermatt, director of the Neuss-Düsseldorf ports, emphasized the role of climate protection in all this. According to him, a high-performance infrastructure can significantly contribute to the transport transition. If we fail to keep up and invest in rail infrastructure, the increasing volumes will inevitably end up on the roads.

There you have it! The IHK in the Rhineland is advocating for a more efficient, sustainable, and competitive rail transport system. Their focus on improving infrastructure, reducing congestion, and minimizing environmental impact is aligned with broader European efforts to promote eco-friendly transportation options. 1. The IHK in the Rhineland has requested the federal government to revise the forecasts of goods traffic, as the federal government's current estimates have underestimated the volume of goods transported from Zeebrugge ports through North Rhine-Westphalia.
  2. Gregor Berghausen, the CEO of IHK Düsseldorf, believes that the expansion of rail infrastructure for goods transport is critical to alleviate road congestion and transfer goods to rails, especially in key corridors like Aachen – Mönchengladbach – Neuss – Düsseldorf, Aachen – Cologne – Bonn – Rhein-Sieg district, Venlo – Viersen – Krefeld – Duisburg, and Emmerich – Duisburg.
  3. A high-performance infrastructure, as proposed by the IHK, can significantly contribute to the transport transition and has an essential role in climate protection, ensuring sustainable economic development in the Rhineland and job creation, while also minimizing the environmental impact and reducing congestion on roads.
