The 6th Transatlantic Summit for Freedom and the Culture of Life Held in Madrid

The 6th Transatlantic Summit for Freedom and the Culture of Life was held in Madrid, Spain, at the Spanish Senate on 1 and 2 December 2021. This summit was the latest event in a series aimed at strengthening ties, exchanging perspectives, and building synergies among politicians and civic leaders from different continents to advance a common agenda of values.

The event was led by Chilean José Antonio Kast, president of the PNfV, and hosted by Jaime Mayor Oreja, honorary president of the PNfV and former Spanish interior minister. Lola Velarde, executive director of PnfV, stated that the summit aimed to send a strong message in favor of freedom and the culture of life.

Political leaders, members of the European Parliament, senators, US congressmen, parliamentarians from Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Portugal, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Uganda, Malawi, and Kenya participated as speakers at the roundtables. The PNfV is an international network of politicians actively engaged in the promotion and defense of life, family, and freedoms.

Representatives of academic and civic institutions, as well as doctors and researchers from three continents also took part in the event. Despite being labelled as fundamentalist, intolerant, and anti-rights, the speeches at the summit focused on the defense of freedoms and the right to life, especially of the unborn.

Jaime Mayor Oreja, in his opening remarks, pointed out that the summit is not a debate between two cultures, but a confrontation against a lie, a narrative, which is half-truth, the worst of lies, the ignorance, and a lack of culture. He further expressed that the opposition faced in the weeks leading up to the summit confirms that the summit is more necessary than ever, according to Velarde.

The Transatlantic Summits are a cornerstone of the PNfV's efforts to achieve its goal. The network organizes the Transatlantic Summits every two years, with previous editions at the United Nations headquarters in New York (2014), the European Parliament in Brussels (2017), the Colombian Capitol in Bogotá (2019), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, and last year at the UN headquarters in New York.

In many countries, there is a growing concern that not only the right to life but also the right to defend it is being cancelled. Velarde expressed this concern, emphasizing the importance of the summit in sending a strong message in favor of freedom and the culture of life. The Transatlantic Summit for Freedom and the Culture of Life in Madrid was attended by a diverse group of participants, including political leaders, academics, civic leaders, doctors, and researchers from various countries, making it a significant event in the global discourse on freedom and life values.
