Expansion at Port of Halifax leaves uncertainty for the future of the nearby grain elevator
In the heart of Nova Scotia, the Halifax grain elevator plays a crucial role in the region's economy, particularly for several key industries. Veselin Milosevic, the COO of Great Northern Timber Holdings, is one of the many who rely on this facility.
Milosevic's company exports over 100,000 tonnes of wood pellets annually to the European Union through the Halifax grain elevator's facilities. Without this option, his company would have to look to the port facility in Belldune, New Brunswick, several hours away. This transportation issue, according to Milosevic, is a major concern for exporting wood pellets without a local solution.
Farmer Biggs in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, produces 3,000 tonnes of soybeans annually for storage and export. Most of the soybean tonnage from farms in Annapolis Valley, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island is also exported through the Halifax grain elevator. The loss of this facility would force farmers like Biggs to ship through Montreal, increasing costs.
The importance of the port to its customers and the Atlantic region as a whole is not lost on its advocates. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has stated that the grain elevator is incredibly important to the province and they will fight to keep it. However, the name of the person advocating for the future of the grain elevator at the Halifax port or negotiating with the Port Authority remains unclear.
