The Union parliamentary group is set to retreat on Sunday, as they grapple with the decision on the chancellor candidacy of the CDU and CSU. The retreat comes as Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader, Johann Wadephul, calls for a roadmap to be established this week.
Wadephul has emphasised that there is no risk-free way for either candidate, and it remains unclear if both Armin Laschet and Markus Söder are ready to take on the challenge. He stated that they have two excellent candidates for the chancellor position, but the question is whether they are both prepared to run.
The discussion is currently taking place within the "Redaktionsnetz Deutschland". While Laschet has explicitly declared his willingness to run for chancellor, Söder's intentions remain unclear. Söder has chosen not to run for the chancellorship and instead supports Laschet's candidacy. There is no indication that Söder has reconsidered or shifted his stance on this matter.
Wadephul indirectly called on Söder to clarify whether he is aiming for a chancellor candidacy or not. Both Laschet, the chairman of the CDU and North Rhine-Westphalian Minister-President, and Söder, the CSU chairman and Bavarian Minister-President, are potential candidates for the chancellor position.
Wadephul stressed that they need a decision by the weekend at the latest, and they must set a procedure for the decision on the chancellor candidacy. This decision will have significant implications for the future leadership of Germany, as the current status shows that Friedrich Merz became the designated candidate for Chancellor of Germany in the 2025 federal election. After the election, Merz was elected as the Chancellor of Germany on May 6, 2025, leading a coalition government with the CDU/CSU and the SPD.
As the Union parliamentary group retreats to discuss this crucial decision, the future of German politics hangs in the balance. The decision on the chancellor candidacy will shape the direction of the country for years to come, and the members of the Union parliamentary group must make this decision carefully and thoughtfully.
