Organic Trends Significantly Reshape Saxony-Anhalt's Agricultural Landscape
Over the past decade, Saxony-Anhalt's agricultural scene has seen a revamp, with an increasing focus on organic farming. CDU's Agriculture Minister Sven Schulze confirms this shift as the State Statistical Office's data underscores a substantial reduction in sheep, cattle, and pig populations.
Michael Reichelt, the State Statistical Office's president, highlights that this agricultural evolution is driven by growing environmental concerns and technological advancements. Despite these changes, Saxony-Anhalt remains economically significant, adding around 20,800 jobs and contributing nearly 1.9 billion euros to the state's gross value added in 2022.
Organic Expansion
By 2023, close to 600 farms have adopted organic practices, almost doubling the number since 2013. The area dedicated to organic farming has also doubled, covering around 10% of the total agricultural land.
Interestingly, while the livestock population of cattle, pigs, and sheep have seen a significant drop, the chicken population has witnessed an impressive 51% increase, bucking the national trend. This upward trend in organic chicken farming is visible even in conventional livestock husbandry.
