Announcing the SEDG GHG Emissions Calculator for Malaysian SMEs

Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM) has launched a new tool to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia measure their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a user-friendly and standardized way. The Sustainable Energy Development Group (SEDG) GHG Emissions Calculator is designed to facilitate meaningful climate action by enabling SMEs to accurately quantify their emissions and manage them more effectively.

The SEDG GHG Emissions Calculator is based on the globally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ensuring alignment with international emission accounting standards. It uses a user-friendly, activity-based approach, relying on easily accessible operational data such as fuel consumption and electricity usage. The calculator converts emissions of various gases—carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O)—into carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

By systematically measuring Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, the tool helps SMEs identify reduction opportunities and integrate climate considerations into their business planning. This transparency encourages SMEs to progress towards their climate goals and contribute to the broader Malaysian economy's efforts in combating climate change.

The SEDG GHG Emissions Calculator comes with pre-filled emission factors from the IPCC's 6th Annual Report (AR6) for fuel combustion commonly used in Malaysia, such as diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, and others. CMM, established by the Securities Commission Malaysia in 2014 to promote the Malaysian capital market, is funding the calculator through the Capital Markets Development Fund.

Navina Balasingam, General Manager of CMM, stated that the SEDG has received widespread acceptance since its launch and will continue to hold nationwide workshops to help SMEs in supply chains disclose ESG data credibly and effectively. The calculator is available at no cost to users in three languages—English, Bahasa Melayu, and Simplified Mandarin.

In addition to the SEDG GHG Emissions Calculator, CMM offers a broader ecosystem of ESG reporting tools that simplify and standardize sustainability reporting, integrating multiple global standards such as GRI, ISSB, TCFD, and ISO 14064. This ensures that the emissions data generated are audit-ready, globally comparable, and can be included in credible sustainability disclosures, aligning SMEs' climate efforts with international frameworks and investor expectations.
