In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the situation remains critical as Russia intensifies its aerial and missile attacks. This escalation has prompted an urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities within Ukraine.

## Current Status

Ukraine currently operates six operational Patriot air defense batteries, which have shown significant effectiveness against advanced Russian missiles like the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles. However, there is a pressing need for more air defense systems and interceptor missiles due to depleting stockpiles and increased Russian aggression.

## Recent Developments

The Russian army attacked Kyiv, Ukraine overnight using drones and missiles, causing over a dozen explosions and injuring at least two people. In response, the Ukrainian government is seeking additional air defense support from Western allies.

US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of arms shipments to Ukraine, including additional Patriot air defense missiles, following a temporary halt due to concerns about stock depletion. This decision coincided with intense Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The recent Russian onslaught prompted NATO-member Poland to scramble aircraft and place its ground-based air defenses on high alert to protect Polish airspace.

Despite these efforts, falling drone debris caused fires in several districts of Kyiv, and more than half of Ukraine was under air alert during the attacks. The Ukrainian forces have successfully defended against many Russian drones and missiles using electronic countermeasures and air defenses, but the Kinzhal missiles remain a challenge, with some causing unspecified damage.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to push for more US and NATO air defense systems to bolster Ukraine's defenses. The intensifying Russian attacks underscore the critical need for sustained and increased air defense support to Ukraine as it faces relentless Russian aggression.
