Expanded order by Cathay Pacific for GE9X engines for their Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
In a significant move to enhance its operations, Cathay Pacific has finalized an agreement with GE Aerospace for the acquisition of GE9X engines to equip 14 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft. This latest commitment increases Cathay Pacific's total order for GE9X-powered 777-9s to 35.
The GE9X engine, exclusively available for the Boeing 777X family, is renowned for its fuel efficiency within its category. GE Aerospace claims that it is the most powerful commercial aircraft engine globally, boasting a 10% improvement in specific fuel consumption compared to the GE90-115B. This improvement is expected to significantly reduce Cathay Pacific's fuel costs and carbon emissions.
The GE9X engine also features advanced technology that significantly reduces emissions, making it compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends. This eco-friendly aspect aligns with Cathay Pacific's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
The collaboration aims to boost network bandwidth by up to five times while ensuring cost efficiency at Cathay Pacific's operating airports. This enhancement will undoubtedly improve the overall travel experience for passengers, keeping them connected throughout their journey.
Alex McGowan, Cathay's chief operations and service delivery officer, stated that the GE9X engine provides market-leading technologies and will help ensure reliable travel across Cathay Pacific's expanding network.
In addition to the engine acquisition, Lufthansa Technik has been selected to handle the entertainment, maintenance, and overhaul of the GE9X engines for these 14 new aircraft. This decision follows Cathay Pacific's previous partnership with Lufthansa Technik for similar services on 21 existing Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
The agreement also includes a service contract, under which GE Aerospace will provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for the GE9X engines. This comprehensive support is expected to ensure the smooth operation of Cathay Pacific's expanded fleet of Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
Mahendra Nair, GE Aerospace commercial programmes group vice president, stated that Cathay Pacific continues to place its confidence in their products and services. This partnership underscores the mutual trust and cooperation between the two companies.
Cathay Pacific's continuous efforts to innovate and improve its services have not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, SITA partnered with Cathay Pacific to enhance network connectivity at 51 airports globally. Moreover, in March this year, Trax was selected by Cathay Pacific to support the digital transformation of its engineering department.
By entering the Airport Technology Excellence Awards, companies can showcase their achievements, elevate their industry profile, and position themselves among top leaders driving aviation industry advancements. The Airport Technology Excellence Awards celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry, making Cathay Pacific's participation a testament to its commitment to progress and excellence.
The combination of the GE9X engine and the Boeing 777-9 will enable Cathay Pacific to reach destinations across the globe, further expanding its network and enhancing its reputation as a leading international airline.
