Expanded lead for Hochul over Stefanik in recent survey, by 25 points
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has received a significant boost in her re-election campaign, according to a new Siena College poll. The poll, conducted between September 8th and 10th, shows Hochul leading her Republican opponent, Rep. Elise Stefanik, by a substantial margin of 25 percentage points.
The poll, released freshly after Hochul's endorsement of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, indicates that the Governor's favorability has increased. Nearly 54% of voters surveyed say she works hard for the people of New York, and near-majorities believe she provides decisive leadership and gets things done.
Hochul's endorsement of Mamdani could potentially improve her standing in New York City, where Democrats gave Mamdani a resounding win in June. Other Democrats had coalesced around Mamdani before Hochul's endorsement.
In the latest poll, Hochul leads Stefanik in New York City, the suburbs, and has a plurality upstate. The Governor now leads with unaffiliated voters, while independents slightly favored Stefanik last month.
President Donald Trump's favorability, on the other hand, is at a two-year low, according to the same poll. A majority of New York voters believe Trump's spending bill will threaten necessary health care programs, and a majority of 57% believe that Trump should not send the National Guard into New York, a stance strongly opposed by Governor Hochul.
The poll also reveals that a similar 53% majority believe Hochul demonstrates honesty and integrity. This is the first time since June that Hochul has reached over 50% support.
Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, is officially supported by the Democratic Party establishment in New York State, exemplified by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. This endorsement could further solidify Mamdani's position in the race for New York City mayor.
In light of these results, it appears that Governor Kathy Hochul's re-election campaign is gaining momentum, with a significant lead over her Republican opponent and the support of the Democratic Party establishment. The coming weeks will undoubtedly see intense campaigning and further developments in this closely-watched race.
