Germans Embrace Securing Borders, Yet Shy Away from Conscription
Expanded budget for weaponry procurement?
Majority support for Germany's defense policies is on the rise. A recent survey from the Forsa market and opinion research institute revealed that 70 percent of Germans consider it correct for Germany and other NATO allies to increase their defense spending in the upcoming years, as per the RTL/ntv trend barometer.
While a quarter of German citizens balk at the proposed increase, the support remains high in West Germany and across all age groups. Union supporters, Greens, SPD, Left, and even AfD have a majority in favor, though their support varies in intensity.
Tallies for Reinstating Conscription
Conscription remains a contentious issue. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has suggested the need for 50,000 to 60,000 additional soldiers. Forsa's survey shows that 59 percent of Germans support the reintroduction of conscription, while 37 percent vehemently oppose the idea.
Opposition to conscription is predominantly seen in the under-30s and supporters of the Left Party. The strongest support emanates from Union parties' supporters, followed by AfD. However, the new military service is expected to remain voluntary for now.
Military Service: The Present and the Future
Voluntary military service is the present approach, as Pistorius confirmed that conscription wouldn't be feasible due to insufficient capacities in barracks and training centers. The focus is on increasing existing capacities first before potential changes are considered.
The discourse around German defense policy, including proposed increases in defense spending and the debate regarding conscription, has stirred political debate and public discussion. Concerns about security threats and potential tax burdens have factored into the discussion. The government's decisions will need to balance the need for increased military readiness with economic and social priorities.

- The community policy and employment policy in Germany, while not directly related to defense spending or conscription, may be influenced by the economic and social implications of these defense decisions, as concerns about potential tax burdens are factors in the public discussion.
