Expanded Audience, Expanded Venues: Plans for the 90th Anniversary of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, as revealed by Alexander Kolotursky
Sverdlovsk Philharmonic to Celebrate Jubilee Season with Large-Scale Cultural Events
The Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, one of the oldest cultural institutions in the region, is gearing up for its 90th anniversary season with a grand project titled "Revitalization of Traditions." This initiative involves leading ensembles of the Philharmonic performing in 10 municipalities of the region, aiming to reconnect with cities where activity was high decades ago but the philharmonic hasn't performed in a long time.
The cities included in this tour are Serov, Kushva, Nizhnyaya Salda, Krasnouralsk, and Nevyanisk. Residents of Nevyanisk, in particular, have expressed their excitement as academic music has been missed in the city.
The jubilee season, named "Symphony of Time," will feature a specific symphony each month, accessible through a QR code on their website. The highlight of the season will be a jubilee concert on June 10, 2026, which coincides with the final day of their beloved festival, "Denis Matsuev Presents...". Maestro Matsuev will participate in the concert.
In addition to this, the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic is working diligently on attracting young audiences. They have changed the start times of some evening concerts to 8 and 9 pm to cater to a younger demographic. The Philharmonic is also developing the "Open Philharmonic" project for the fifth year, aimed at preparing future listeners, including children and youth.
The Philharmonic is also expanding its network of concert halls in the region. While the details about the difference between municipal halls and branches within the network are not explicitly stated, it is generally understood that municipal halls refer to primary concert venues owned or operated by a city or municipality, serving as main cultural centers. Branches, on the other hand, are usually smaller or subsidiary venues that are part of the same organization but located in different areas or serving more specialized or local functions.
The Philharmonic is still working on securing a new concert hall in Yekaterinburg. In their quest for a modern concert hall, they have been studying examples of concert halls in Luxembourg, Paris, and Hamburg.
The Sverdlovsk Philharmonic has received a governor's grant for Sverdlovsk Oblast for the "Reviving Traditions" project. They are also looking forward to hosting the Russian Choral Forum for five days in April 2026. This event will be a significant part of their jubilee season, as they strive to make it unique and memorable.
In their mission to ensure that academic music is better represented in society, the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic is making every effort to bring their music to more people, both young and old, in more places across the region.
The Sverdlovsk Philharmonic's jubilee season, named "Symphony of Time," will not only feature a symphony each month but also include various genres of music as part of their entertainment for the region's residents. In an attempt to attract a younger audience, the Philharmonic has modified the start times of some evening concerts to cater to a demographic accustomed to later hours.
