"Exodus guitarist Gary Holt candidly reveals struggles with low attendance in a Nebraska gig, claiming as few as 12 attendees, in his latest autobiography"
Gary Holt's Memoir: A Candid Look at Exodus' Struggles and Triumphs
Gary Holt, the legendary guitarist of the thrash metal band Exodus, is currently on a tour promoting his new memoir, "A Fabulous Disaster." The book, published by Hachette Books, offers an unvarnished account of the band's journey through years of hardship, addiction, and industry setbacks.
"A Fabulous Disaster: From The Garage to Madison Square Garden, The Hard Way" provides a raw and honest portrayal of Exodus' rise to fame and the challenges they faced along the way. The memoir candidly discusses playing to tiny crowds, battling addiction, and eventually finding redemption after the death of a close friend.
During the tour, Holt has shared stories from his early days with Exodus, including anecdotes about the origins of thrash metal, his connection with Kirk Hammett, who once invited him into the band, and even jamming Black Sabbath riffs in a near-empty venue.
At the Rock City Music Company book signing, Holt admitted that Exodus had a tough time, playing to small crowds in venues that could hold hundreds of people. One such instance was a show in Colorado Springs where they only had 18 paid attendees. In Omaha, Nebraska, Holt played a show at The Ranch Bowl in the '80s and again in '97, where the crowd was so small that the band started jamming Black Sabbath songs.
Holt believes in being honest about the band's struggles in his memoir. He has not yet read the book himself, but considers it as something he has lived and heard many times. Kirk Hammett, a former member of Exodus, wrote the foreword for "A Fabulous Disaster."
The title of the memoir, "A Fabulous Disaster," suggests that it candidly addresses the band's successes and challenges. It is now available for purchase, offering fans a unique glimpse into the life and career of one of thrash metal's pioneers.
