German Gov't Pulls Plug on Mediterranean Sea Refugee Rescue Funding
No longer allocating domestic resources for Mediterranean sea rescues. - Exhaustion of Financial Aid for Mediterranean Rescue Efforts
Hey there! Let's chat about a hot button issue conversations are buzzing about - the German federal government's decision to halt financial support for civilian rescue operations of refugees in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the government's budget plans, called the AA (let's assume this is the Foreign Office), there's no cash set aside for organizations like Sea-Eye, SOS Humanity, Sant'Egidio, and others.
Until now, the government had been doling out a cool €2 million each year to give a helping hand in the Mediterranean. Even at the start of the year, despite not having a final 2025 budget in place, approximately €900,000 was still sent to five organizations. But that's where the gravy train ends, the AA said.
Naturally, Sea-Eye, one of the primary rescuers, isn't happy about the cuts. "We've been bridging the gap in the Mediterranean for a decade now - a gap that should be covered by European states, including Germany," says chairman Gorden Isler. With no funding, Sea-Eye might be forced to keep its boats docked even when lives are at stake.
Green Party MP Jamila Schäfer also took the government to task, criticizing the plan. The cuts won't reduce migration, Schäfer argues, but they'll make escape routes even more dangerous. "We pay for a fire department to save lives on land. We can't stand by while people drown at sea," Schäfer said.

- The German Green Party MP, Jamila Schäfer, criticizes the government's decision to halt funding for Mediterranean Sea refugee rescue operations, stating that the cuts won't reduce migration but will make escape routes even more dangerous, likening it to neglecting a fire department that saves lives on land while people drown at sea.
