Federal Job Cuts Initiative Launched by Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Halted After Court Decision

A U.S. appeals court has refused to suspend a lower court's ruling that temporarily halts the mass job cuts across federal agencies, including those led by Elon Musk at the DOGE, as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to overhaul the federal bureaucracy.

The administration had pleaded for an emergency stay of an injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco. The legal action was initiated by labor unions and several city governments, including representatives from Chicago and San Francisco, who raised concerns over the government exceeding its legal boundaries by implementing abrupt workforce cuts.

In her ruling, Judge Illston stated that while presidents possess the power to reorganize federal agencies, such structural changes require congressional involvement. Her injunction stops federal departments from enacting the executive order signed by Trump in February and a DOGE-OPM (Office of Personnel Management) memorandum that ordered aggressive personnel reductions.

Trump had appointed Musk to lead the federal job cuts initiative through DOGE, advocating the mandate given to him by voters to remake the federal government. Despite the setback, the DOGE continues its efforts in collaboration with key government officials such as Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, allowing for ongoing changes within the government structure.

Notably, the job cuts have disproportionately affected Black federal workers, who make up a significant portion of the federal workforce. Regardless, some agencies still work on reorganization efforts, such as consolidating functions or addressing probationary period firings.

Despite the current legal hurdles, the Trump administration is working to overturn the court decision, aiming to proceed with its planned restructuring of the federal system.
