Executive Action Targets National Forests: Preservation Advocates Speak Out
President Trump has signed an executive order to expedite logging projects, potentially endangering species protected under the Endangered Species Act. In response, Robert Dewey, the vice president of government relations at Defenders of Wildlife, issued the following statement:
"The Trump administration's decision to prioritize short-term timber production over science-based forest management threatens our forests and the species that inhabit them. The executive order, without providing any emergency justification, suggests agencies find ways to utilize emergency regulations and circumvent the Endangered Species Act to benefit corporate interests.
"There is no legitimate reason or emergency to hastily approve logging projects or weaken the Endangered Species Act. The Act serves as a crucial conservation law as it has successfully protected and saved 99% of the species listed, including our national symbol, the bald eagle. The Act's importance is underscored by the fact that many endangered species, like those found in the forests targeted by this executive order, are often habitat-dependent."
