Record-breaking Executions in Iran: UN Reveals Staggering Figures

Executions in Iran reach nearly a thousand within a year

Get ready to read about some shocking numbers! The United Nations recently reported that Iran has executed close to a thousand people in a single year. This puts Iran second in line, following China, for the most executions worldwide in 2024.

In 2023, the number of executions dropped by a whopping 14%. However, the recent figure is the highest since 2015, according to UN Deputy Human Rights Commissioner Nada Al-Nashif.

Why all the fuss about Iran, you ask? Well, the majority of death sentences (over half) were issued for drug-related offenses. That's right, folks—drug crimes are the main culprits driving Iran's skyrocketing execution numbers.

Murder and security offenses accounted for 43% and 3% of executions, respectively, while a mere 2% were related to sexual crimes. Though at least four executions took place in public, according to the report.

Last week, another man was executed in Iran in connection with the mass protests in fall 2022. The judiciary in the Islamic Republic claimed he was found guilty of "waging war against God."

Amnesty International reported that Iran ranked second globally in the number of executions last year, following China. Many countries have done away with capital punishment entirely.

Now, for a brief history lesson—between 2015 and 2024, Iran has consistently been among the countries with the highest number of executions. Reports from human rights organizations indicate that the highest numbers of executions occurred around 2015-2017, with annual executions reportedly exceeding 500 in some years.

If you're curious about why Iran's execution numbers remain so high, it's largely due to their strict stance on drug trafficking and political repression. International criticism and human rights advocacy have tried to put a damper on Iran's capital punishment practices, but the judicial system has held steady.
