Preparations Kick Off: Hertha BSC Initiates New Season Training - Exciting blue horizons: Hertha kick-starts pre-season preparations

You'd be hard-pressed to find more excitement surrounding Hertha BSC—Berlin's beloved second-division football club—in a considerable span of time. With captain Toni Leistner and star player Fabian Reese leading the charge, the 2021-22 season preparation was rife with optimism and high spirits. Head coach Stefan Leitl made it abundantly clear at the start: a return to the Bundesliga was the primary goal.

At the first training session of the season, nearly the entire squad was present, with only the top goalkeepers missing. Tjark Ernst, the number one, was on a mission with the U21 to win the EM title in Slovakia. Deputy Marius Gersbeck was still recovering from a shoulder operation. With Gersbeck out, Tim Goller and Dennis Smarsch stepped up for the goalkeeper drills.

The training pitch was filled with new faces wearing the blue training jerseys. Paul Seguin (ex-FC Schalke 04), Sebastian Grönning (FC Ingolstadt), Leon Jensen (Karlsruher SC), and Niklas Kolbe (SSV Ulm 1846) were the latest additions to the team. Marton Dardai and Jon Thorsteinsson also joined in with a limited program, having taken shorter vacations after representing their respective countries in June. Leitl regarded their early return as a promising sign for the upcoming season.

The team's first test match took place against Ludwigsfelder FC on Saturday (13:00). This fixture would also serve as a grand unveiling of the new jerseys from the new supplier Castore. From July 11 to 19, Hertha would travel to Kitzbühel for a training camp, getting a much-needed alpine boost before the second-division season kicked off on the weekend of August 1-3. With the DFL releasing the schedule on Friday, Leitl would soon find out who they'd face in their opening game.

Hertha's 2021-22 campaign was poised to be a defining one, serving as a testament to the club's resilience and determination to reclaim their position in German football's elite tier. Under the guidance of coach Stefan Leitl, Berlin's cherished team had their sensors set firmly on making a memorable comeback.
