Excited spectators welcome Thomas Müller in Vancouver
Thomas Müller Joins Vancouver Whitecaps FC: Legendary German Footballer Set for MLS Debut
Thomas Müller, the renowned German attacking midfielder and former Bayern Munich icon, has joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The move marks a new chapter in Müller's illustrious career, as he prepares for his MLS debut against Houston Dynamo FC this Sunday.
Müller's arrival in Vancouver was met with much fanfare, with enthusiastic fans greeting him at the airport upon his arrival in Canada. Following his arrival, Müller signed his first autographs in the arrivals area of Vancouver International Airport, much to the delight of his new supporters.
After signing autographs, Müller went to a sports bar on level 3 to watch the Canadian Championship semi-final first leg between Vancouver Whitecaps and Forge FC. Unfortunately, Müller had already been picked up in a dark van by that point and missed the match, which ended in a 2:2 draw.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC acquired Müller's discovery rights from FC Cincinnati by paying up to $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) spread over 2025 and 2026 to finalize his signing. Müller signed for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season, with an option as a Designated Player for 2026.
Müller joins Vancouver after a 17-season storied career at Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals in 756 appearances and won 12 Bundesliga titles. His signing is considered a transformational moment for the Whitecaps, who were second in the Western Conference at the 2025 Leagues Cup break and had recently reached the Concacaf Champions Cup final.
Vancouver Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster praised Müller as a world-class player known for his “Raumdeuter” style, elite chance creation, and strong leadership qualities. Müller is expected to train with the Whitecaps for the first time the day after his press conference, which is scheduled to take place at 6 pm CEST.
Müller is set to make his competitive debut for the Whitecaps in a few days. The details of his debut are not yet specified, but given his status and experience, fans are eagerly anticipating his impact on the team. Müller has been granted an International Roster Slot and replaces an injured player in the squad, and the club awaits his International Transfer Certificate, visa, and work permit to officially add him to the roster.
The MLS season has been running since February and is unrelated to the Canadian Championship. Vancouver Whitecaps will not be competing in the Canadian Championship this year, as the winner of the competition becomes the Canadian champion.
In a speech at a sports bar, Müller addressed a few words to the fans, expressing his happiness to be a Whitecap and his desire to shape the future with them. The Musqueam tribe also welcomed Müller with a traditional drum march and a speech by Chief Wayne Sparrow.
Müller's contract with the Whitecaps is until the end of next season, and he did not provide any specific details about his future plans or strategies with the team during his speech. However, fans are optimistic that Müller's arrival will help propel the Whitecaps to new heights in the MLS.

Thomas Müller, eager to contribute beyond football, expresses interest in community aid and vocational training programs for the youth of Vancouver. During his spare time, he is planning to take part in local sports initiatives, such as coaching young teams or introducing German football academy principles.
On his days off, Müller may even find himself watching European leagues, including the Champions League, to stay updated on the latest football trends, hoping to bring some of that knowledge into his new team's training sessions.
