Exceptional Cinema and Live Performances
In the picturesque town of Hünfeld, the Point Alpha Foundation, in collaboration with Wigbertschule Hünfeld and Landestheater Eisenach, is set to launch an extraordinary summer cultural event. From June 12th to August 14th, the US Camp will transform into an open-air theater and cinema, offering a series of captivating performances and films that promise to engage, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages.
The heart of this cultural extravaganza is a unique theater production titled "The Razed Houses in the Border Area Tell Their Story", which premieres on June 26th. This poignant narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the fate of villages and homes destroyed or abandoned due to border fortifications in the Rhön region during the Cold War era. The authors, Wolfgang Christmann and Bruno Leister, will be present at the event, engaging in conversation with the audience, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the performance.
The Point Alpha Foundation's motivation behind this production, along with four carefully curated films, is to preserve and communicate the historical memory of the border area during the Cold War era. By using cultural expressions—both theater and film—the foundation aims to convey the stories of those who lived in the heavily militarized region between East and West Germany, focusing on the human impact of the division and the political circumstances that shaped these lives.
The series kicks off on June 12th with "Two to One", a fast-paced film about a group of friends who discover several million DDR marks in an old shaft and develop a system to turn them into capital. The summer cinema series continues on July 10th with "Sugar Sand", followed by the screening of "Goodbye Lenin!" on August 7th. The series concludes on August 14th with the classic satire "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".
All cinema and theater events are free of charge, making history accessible and vivid for everyone. Registration can be done by email or phone, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all attendees. The unique setting for these summer cultural experiences, far from a typical venue, adds an extra touch of authenticity to the events.
Aline Gros, scientific employee of Point Alpha Foundation, emphasizes the quality of the films selected for the series, stating that all have received the best reviews and are worth watching. The foundation's commitment to preserving the legacy of the border region and fostering understanding about the Cold War's impact on everyday people living in the border area is evident in every aspect of this summer cultural experience.
By offering a unique way to engage with the regional border history of the Rhön, the Point Alpha Foundation's summer cinema and theater series aims to transform historical memory into a shared cultural heritage that informs present and future generations. This event is not just a series of screenings and performances; it's an opportunity to honour the stories of a once divided Germany and to keep alive the memories of those affected by the border's presence.
