Assamese Singer Zubeen Garg Passes Away at the Age of 52
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated figure in the Indian music industry, has tragically passed away at the age of 52. The singer, songwriter, actor, and composer was in Singapore to participate in the North East Festival and was scheduled to perform later that day.
Garg, originally named Zubeen Borthakur, was born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, India. He later took the surname Garg from his gotra. Known for his versatility across multiple languages, Garg gained widespread acclaim for his work in Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali music.
His journey in the music industry began at the tender age of three, and he released his debut album Anamika in 1992. Over the years, Garg released a series of successful albums, including Maya, Zubeenor Gaan, Xabda, Pakhi, Shishu, and Jantra, which are some of his most popular Assamese works.
In Bollywood, Garg made his mark with songs for films such as Dil Se, Vaastav, Fiza, Asoka, Kaante, Gangster, and Krrish 3. One of his most celebrated works is the 2006 hit "Ya Ali" from the film Gangster: A Love Story, starring Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, and Shiney Ahuja.
Ashok Singhal, Cabinet Minister of Assam, described Garg as more than a singer but the pride of Assam and the nation. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister, also acknowledged Garg as a stalwart of Assam's culture.
Garg was an avid biker and was often spotted riding premium motorcycles. He also owned a collection of luxury vehicles, including a BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover Velar, and an Isuzu SUV with a custom coating.
On the fateful day in Singapore, Garg developed severe breathing difficulties while scuba diving. He was immediately given CPR and rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Garg was declared deceased in the ICU around 2:30 PM IST.
The news of Garg's sudden demise has left fans, supporters, and the Assamese community worldwide in shock and grief. Ashok Singhal expressed his grief over Garg's death, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed deep sorrow.
At the time of his passing, Garg's net worth was estimated at around $8 million (approximately ₹70 crore). His contributions to the music industry, particularly in Assamese music, will continue to be celebrated and remembered.
In memory of Zubeen Garg, the music world mourns the loss of a true talent, and his fans and supporters remember him as a beacon of inspiration and a symbol of Assamese pride.
