Ex-Schalke employee secures new position

Ready for his next coaching venture, Onur Cinel is leaving his post as assistant coach at FC Red Bull Salzburg, aiming to lead a top-flight team in the future. And, that's exactly what he's achieving! The 40-year-old former Schalke player is now taking the helm at Cercle Brugge, a Belgian top-flight team.

The announcement was made mid-afternoon on a Thursday, coinciding with Cercle Brugge's decision to part ways with Bernd Storck, who had stepped in to save the team from relegation in the final weeks of the season.

Behind the bench, Cinel will be the man in charge of rejuvenating Cercle Brugge after a year of disappointments. The Belgians see him as a diligent and aspiring coach who advocates a modern, fluid football philosophy. The team praises Cinel's forceful personality and his knack for developing young talents, which he showcased during his tenure at Salzburg's youth team and Schalke 04.

Cinel's employment history with the Royal Blues spans from 2012 to the present. For numerous years, he honed his skills in the academy, handling the U23 and U17 teams. In Schalke's relegation year, he temporarily joined the senior team's coaching staff. Following this, Cinel relocated to RB Salzburg, where he had temporary stints with the farm team FC Liefering, the youth league team, and as interim coach of the pros. Last season, he served as assistant coach for the first team. He also worked closely with national coach Ralf Rangnick for three years.

Cinel's new role will see him confront former BVB talent Paris Brunner in Bruges. His contract will run until 2027. "I am thrilled to become the head coach of Cercle Brugge. From the onset, I felt a personal and sporting bond with the club," Cinel expressed. "When I visited the stadium and the training facilities, I knew instantly that this is the place I wanted to be. I can't wait to start my first training session on Monday and get acquainted with the players and staff."
