Former Thuringia Minister-President Thomas Kemmerich Launches New Political Party 'Team Freedom'

Thomas Kemmerich, the former Minister-President of Thuringia, has announced the establishment of a new political party called 'Team Freedom'. The news comes after Kemmerich's departure from the Free Democratic Party (FDP) last week.

Kemmerich served as Minister-President for a month in early 2020, following a secret ballot vote. However, he resigned due to nationwide outrage and Chancellor Angela Merkel's demand for a reversal of the election. In his resignation letter, Kemmerich stated that his ideas for the future of the country and the party's content orientation have diverged from the FDP.

The new party, which will be presented in the coming days and weeks, aims to lead voters beyond all pigeonholes and into the realm of freedom. 'Team Freedom' is planning to run in the 2026 state elections and intends to put forward qualified, non-partisan candidates.

However, the party will not allow entry into its ranks. Gerhard Papke, the former FDP parliamentary group leader in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament, has expressed skepticism towards 'Team Freedom', stating that it would likely be just as unsuccessful as the Alliance for Germany or the Values Union.

'Team Freedom' has outlined several key policy areas. They aim to advocate for the strengthening of freedom of expression, a streamlined state, and a stricter asylum policy. The party also wants to stop the financing of non-governmental organizations with tax money, abolish the broadcasting fee, and reactivate nuclear power.

Kemmerich's commitment to liberal basic values remains unchanged. It is worth noting that the Blue Party, a political party initiated by former AfD chairwoman Frauke Petry, did not run in nationwide elections. Petry founded The Blue Party after leaving the AfD in 2017, with potential for up to 30 percent, but the party dissolved in 2019 after poor results in state elections. Petry is now the chairwoman of 'Team Freedom', which was initially organized as a civic movement and club, preparing for future party formation starting 2026.

In the last Thuringia state election, 'Team Freedom' did not appear as a party and therefore received no voter percentage. However, the political party emerging from the 'Team Freedom' association is not yet named but will be a new party founded on the platform of 'Team Freedom'.

Kemmerich and his family were subjected to scrutiny from left-wing extremists, a fact that has not been mentioned in the context of his new political venture. It is unclear how these past experiences will influence the direction and success of 'Team Freedom'.
