Ex-President Brixner of DRV passes away
After a life devoted to the benefit of cooperatives, Dr. Joerg Brixner, the former president of the German Raiffeisen Association (DRA), has passed away on August 31 at the age of 91.
Dr. Brixner's contributions to the cooperative agricultural and food economy in Germany spanned over four decades. He was active in various positions within the Raiffeisen organization for 37 years, 22 of those years at the former Wuerttembergische Landwirtschaftliche Zentralgenossenschaft (WLZ).
During his tenure as DRA president, which lasted eight years, Dr. Brixner led the organization through a time of profound upheavals. He committed himself to strengthening the competitiveness of cooperatives and promoting their market and customer orientation. Under his leadership, the DRA aligned itself with the changing competitive conditions on the European markets.
Dr. Brixner's contribution to the further development of the cooperative guiding principle was groundbreaking. His foresight and great sense of responsibility left lasting traces, particularly in modernizing the agricultural and food economy. He was instrumental in integrating East German cooperatives into the Raiffeisen organization after reunification.
Dr. Brixner's name is associated with numerous specialist publications. He was awarded the Professor Niklas Medal in Gold, the highest award of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, and the German Raiffeisen Medal, the highest award of the Raiffeisen organization. His work significantly benefited the cooperatives.
DRA President Franz-Josef Holzenkamp stated that Dr. Brixner was a remarkable personality who significantly shaped the cooperative agricultural and food economy in Germany over decades. The DRA will keep Dr. Brixner's memory alive in honor.
Dr. Brixner's long-standing connection to the Research Institute for Cooperative Studies at the University of Hohenheim was also noteworthy. The Research Center for Cooperative Research at the University of Hohenheim was supported for a long time by Professor Dr. Hermann Schubert before he retired.
The DRA thanked Dr. Brixner for his life's work for the benefit of cooperatives. They expressed their deepest condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Brixner will be remembered as a visionary leader who made a significant impact on the cooperative sector in Germany.
