Late Victor Akande's Widow Seeks to Fill His Seat in Lagos Assembly

Hon. Victor Akande, a former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, following complications from an auto crash in the Ojo area of Lagos State the previous week [1][2][5].

Akande served two terms in the Lagos Assembly between 2015 and 2023, representing Ojo State Constituency I. Initially, he was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015 but later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was re-elected in 2019 [1][2].

During his tenure, Akande was the Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC (Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission) [1][2][4]. He was also a legal practitioner, recognised for his seasoned experience in law and politics [1][5].

Since the confirmation of Akande's death, there has been a clamour for his wife, Justina Azuka, to replace him as a lawmaker. Campaign posters of Azuka, wife of the slain Anambra lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 constituency, have surfaced [3].

Justina Azuka, the widow of the late Hon. Victor Akande, is seeking support to replace her deceased husband. However, there is controversy about the refusal of the Labour Party to give her their platform as compensation for her husband's death. Some people are appealing to the party to nominate Azuka as a candidate [4].

It is worth noting that a poster of Azuka as the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has also surfaced, but there is no information provided about Azuka's affiliation with the ADC prior to this news [6].

Before her husband's death, Azuka had faced a challenging time. She was kidnapped in Onitsha on the eve of Christmas of 2024 while returning home for the yuletide [7]. Despite rumours of a heavy ransom being paid for her release, her body was found.

The body of Hon. Victor Akande was later found at the foot of the Second Niger Bridge in February [8].

This news has sparked a significant discussion about the potential of Justina Azuka as a lawmaker, and it remains to be seen whether she will be nominated by any political party to fill her late husband's seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
