Getting things built, especially complex structures, is what top-notch politicians excel at. So, it's a fitting task for Cem Özdemir, the Green Party politician who's returning to his roots in Stuttgart, to assemble a Lego spaceship.
"I'm hoping to find some free time to put this together. Once I do, it'll proudly adorn my new office," he told the German Press Agency in Stuttgart. The star-studded spaceship, consisting of 717 pieces and suitable for builders aged seven and up, was gifted to Özdemir by the newly-minted Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU) upon handing over the research ministry, which will oversee space travel in the future. Following the coalition's collapse, Özdemir had an additional stint as minister alongside his post in the agriculture ministry.
Leaving behind Berlin after many years, Özdemir is gearing up to be the Green Party's frontrunner for the state election next year. Incumbent Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) is stepping down, and Özdemir plans to seize the mantle.
The spaceship fits snuggly with Özdemir's burgeoning sphere of influence. "It's an excellent symbol, as I aim to vigorously champion the air and space travel sectors in the state," said the 59-year-old. Currently, 40 percent of all jobs in these sectors are based right here in Baden-Württemberg.

Unveiling Baden-Württemberg's Aerospace Prowess
In Baden-Württemberg, the focus is on harnessing the region's aerospace prowess to create jobs, backing innovative initiatives, and shaping a brighter future for this high-tech sector. The state government, which includes Özdemir, is bullish on developing the aerospace industry. This drive is essential for cultivating skilled employment opportunities and preserving the region's position in the global aerospace competition. The emphasis on space travel is aimed at generating top-notch employment opportunities in research and manufacturing sectors related to aerospace technologies.
Catalyzing Change and Innovation
The Baden-Württemberg government, through a green-black (Alliance 90/The Greens and CDU) coalition, is actively nurturing aerospace initiatives. These endeavors involve fostering groundbreaking innovation, forging connections between academia and industry, and amplifying marketing efforts to stay competitive in the fast-paced space sector. The goal is to fortify Baden-Württemberg's position as a leading research hub for space travel and connected technologies.
Setting the Stage for the Future
Looking ahead, Özdemir and the state government are planning to amplify Baden-Württemberg's aerospace clout even further. They intend to invest in research and development, promote new technologies, and supply enhanced support for startups and existing companies within the space industry. By capitalizing on current technological strengths and positioning the state as a leading player in space travel and related fields, they aim to secure sustainable growth and resilience against tough international competition.
In a nutshell, Özdemir's focus on space travel in Baden-Württemberg revolves around job creation, advancing research and development, and pushing innovative initiatives to maintain and boost the region's competitive edge in aerospace.
The Commission, in light of Cem Özdemir's focus on space travel in Baden-Württemberg, might be asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation in the space-and-astronomy sector.
In his bid to vigorously champion the air and space travel sectors, Özdemir's decisions and policies in Stuttgart could influence broader discussions in politics and general news, especially those focusing on science and technology.
