In the small town of Bad Lobenstein, Germany, the mayor, Thomas Weigelt, has been embroiled in a series of controversies over the past few years. Since his dismissal from the civil service in August 2022, two deputy mayors have been leading the city's affairs under difficult financial circumstances.

The troubles for Weigelt began in 2022 when an alleged attack on a journalist caused a stir. Weigelt was charged with physically attacking a newspaper reporter at a market festival, and the criminal proceedings were suspended upon payment of a fine. However, this was not the end of Weigelt's legal woes.

Weigelt was also accused of arbitrarily upgrading two employees and instructing municipal employees to sell wine at a festival during working hours. Another proceeding against him is still ongoing. During the trial, Weigelt apologised for his statements and attributed them to a "mental and emotional blackout" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Controversial statements made by Weigelt in a podcast and social networks were also at issue. He accused the federal government on Facebook of lying and treason, which sparked widespread criticism. Following these statements, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him.

In response to the controversies, Weigelt pledged to donate 20% of his pension to the Lebenshilfeverein Bad Lobenstein, a local charity. Despite these efforts, his dismissal from the civil service was upheld, marking the end of his tenure as mayor of Bad Lobenstein.

Under the leadership of the two deputy mayors, the town of Bad Lobenstein continues to navigate the challenges of difficult financial circumstances, hoping for a more stable and peaceful future.
