Derby Upset: Unterhaching Ekes Out 1-0 Victory Over 1860
Frustration for 1860 Munich and exhilaration for SpVgg Unterhaching! In the S-Bahn derby, the newly-promoted Unterhaching narrowly defeated TSV 1860 Munich 1-0. The lone goal of the day came courtesy of a combination of former Lions players. Matthias Fetsch, who graced the pitch for Sechzig from 2009 to 2010, headed in the winning goal after a cross by Sebastian Maier, another ex-lion who played for Sechzig from 2008 to 2013 (20th minute).
1860 started the game on the right foot, with good chances in the opening minutes, but missed an early lead. Unterhaching, though, took advantage of the situation. Fabian Greilinger lost the ball, and Michael Glück was unable to clear it, leading to Fetsch's header finding the back of the net.
The goal would remain Haching's best chance until half-time. The Lions rallied back, generating more chances but failing to capitalize. Raphael Schifferl slipped up after a pass from goalkeeper Rene Vollath, allowing Starke to snatch the ball. Morris Schröter took his shot, but Josef Welzmüller managed to clear it off the line.
At halftime, the stands echoed with discontent from the 1860 supporters. "We want to see you fight" was the cry from the Löwen fans.
In the second half, the back-and-forth continued. Schröter was awarded a penalty against Dennis Waidner (61'), but the fouled player missed the opportunity to extend Haching's lead. A week prior, Albion Vrenezi had also missed from the spot against Pipinsried.
Referee Timo Gansloweit then handed Michael Glück a yellow card (63) after a complaint following a tackle before 1860 goalkeeper David Richter shared his displeasure: "We don't concede the penalty, and then the referee allegedly gives a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. I beg you. There's so much at stake here."
Unfairly outnumbered, Haching struggled to build upon their lead, leading to a chaotic finale in Giesing. After 90 minutes, the Lions had no choice but to concede defeat. 1860 found themselves in 13th place in the table, with just 20 points to their name.
Post-game, David Richter expressed his frustration: "That's just bitter. I don't know what we need to change. We play a great game, but we don't score the crucial goal. We don't get the penalty, and then the game downfalls." The discontent was evident, with whistles from the stands and many fans leaving before the final whistle.
Conversely, Unterhaching celebrated their hard-earned victory in sixth place after their promotion. The team from Haching had been unbeaten in the league for four consecutive games, putting them on course to avoid relegation. Matthias Fetsch summed up the mood: "We'll definitely be celebrating hard tonight. We've earned that too!"
