In an interview with "Die Welt am Sonntag" on Sunday, Ami Ayalon, the former head of Israel's internal security service Shin Bet, advocated for Germany's active support in facilitating negotiations towards a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

Ayalon's call comes as the international community seeks a resolution to the ongoing conflict, with increasing concern over the violence and instability in the region. The former security chief believes that a two-state solution is the only viable option for a lasting peace.

Ayalon's proposal involves the involvement of multiple countries, including Germany, Egypt, France, and Saudi Arabia. He is urging Germany to back Egypt's mediation proposal and join the French-Saudi initiative for a two-state solution.

Germany, which currently supports a negotiated two-state solution as the only sustainable path to peace, has been participating in diplomatic efforts. In July 2025, German Minister Florian Hahn spoke at the United Nations, calling for an immediate ceasefire, full support for the two-state solution, and cautioning Israel against settlement expansions and harsh measures impacting Palestinians.

While Germany supports the peace diplomacy led by France, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, it has been cautious in taking more assertive diplomatic actions. Germany maintains that Palestinian statehood recognition should be a final step following negotiated peace, a stance that has caused some tensions with European partners like France and the UK.

Despite these tensions, Germany remains firmly committed to a two-state solution. The country endorses the ceasefires and humanitarian aid, but stops short of independently recognizing Palestine until a negotiated agreement is reached. This careful stance aligns with Germany’s historical obligations and desire for a durable peace rather than unilateral moves.

Ayalon's optimism about the potential for a peaceful resolution to the conflict is shared by many. He emphasized the urgency of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and called for a renewed commitment from all parties involved to the principle of a two-state solution.
