Chancellor Merz's Critique of Israel's Gaza Policy

Ex-Israeli envoy advocates for increased scrutiny of Gaza policy strategies

Former Israeli Ambassador Avi Primor has urged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to take bolder steps in criticizing Israel's strategy in the Gaza Strip, stating that Merz's criticism is polite but weak[2]. According to Primor, the Chancellor should be more assertive and employ "clear words," rather than shying away from direct confrontation[1].

Primor believes that the German government should play a more active role in the Middle East, using its influence to shape Israel's policy[1]. While Germany's historical sensitivity is understandable, Primor argues that Merz could be even more outspoken like other European leaders[1].

During his tenure as Israel's ambassador to Germany, Primor advocated for dialogue between the two nations but also openly criticized his own government on certain issues[3]. He highlighted the economic dependence of Israel on Europe compared to the USA, but emphasized that Europe often holds back, waiting for the USA instead of assuming a leading role[3].

Weapon Exports Controversy

A debate has erupted over the delivery of weapons to Israel, as some demand a review of German arms exports following Israel's military actions in Gaza. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of the CDU announced a review to determine if these actions violate international humanitarian law[5]. However, he also emphasized the necessity for Israel to defend itself against external threats such as Houthi militias and Hezbollah[5].

Similarly, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali-Radovan, has called for a response to Israel's actions from the German government. When asked if there should be a halt on weapon deliveries, she replied that consequences are necessary if humanitarian aid is obstructed and international law is disregarded[5].

The Commission, amidst the turmoil of war-and-conflicts and politics in general-news, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the protection of the environment. This pertinent action comes at a time when the Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is facing criticism for his relatively mild critique of Israel's Gaza policy, with some calling for a more assertive stance.
