Ex-Head of Government in Saxony-Anhalt has passed away
Wolfgang Böhmer, a renowned politician and former Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, has sadly passed away. Throughout his illustrious career, Böhmer held prominent roles, including serving as Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, President of the Bundesrat of Germany, and a member of the Landtag (state parliament) of Saxony-Anhalt.
Born on January 27, 1936, in Dürrhennersdorf, Saxony, Böhmer began his political career in 1990 as a member of the state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt. This marked the start of a deep involvement in regional politics that would span over three decades.
In 1991, Böhmer served as Finance Minister and then Social Minister in a CDU/FDP government. His leadership and dedication were evident, as he took over the leadership of Saxony-Anhalt's CDU in 1998.
Böhmer made history in 2001 when he became the parliamentary group leader and the CDU's top candidate for the 2002 state election. With the CDU, he achieved a clear victory in that election and formed a coalition with the FDP. However, due to the weak FDP result, he had to change coalition partners and governed with the SPD from then on.
During his tenure as Minister-President, from 2002 to 2011, Böhmer was a guarantor of balance and stood for the preservation of traditions as well as the modernization of Saxony-Anhalt. His political style was described as balanced and careful by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, while Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz referred to him as a reliable politician with a clear course. Steinmeier also praised Böhmer as a bridge-builder between East and West, between tradition and renewal.
Merz further honoured Böhmer as a "recognized father of his homeland." In addition to his service as Minister-President, Böhmer also served as President of the Bundesrat of Germany, further demonstrating his influence within German federal and state politics.
Böhmer was widowed and remarried in 2004. Throughout his life, he made great achievements for Germany and Saxony-Anhalt, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of politics. His passing marks the end of an era in Saxony-Anhalt's political landscape, and he will be deeply missed by many.
