Tübingen's Mayor Boris Palmer Makes a Switch to Free Voters Association for 2024 Elections

Announcing his move on Monday in Tübingen, Boris Palmer, the current Mayor of Tübingen, has decided to run for the Free Voters Association (FWV) list in the local elections in Baden-Württemberg on June 9, 2024. The main motivation behind this decision, according to Palmer, is financial matters. The district is planning to levy a whopping 60 million euros in the coming year, and Palmer believes that as a member of the district council, he could have a say in the amount and how much could be allocated back to the city for projects. This makes a strong case for the Mayor to have a seat on the district council.

Thomas Hölsch, the parliamentary group leader of the FWV, shared his thoughts on Palmer, stating that he fits well with their group. The Free Voters Association is fairly independent, focusing solely on local affairs and encouraging diverse ideas. The "Schwäbisches Tagblatt" first reported about Palmer's plans.

Palmer has made headlines multiple times for his political statements

At 51 years old, Boris Palmer has served as the Mayor of Tübingen since 2007, and his tenure has been anything but boring. His statements on refugee policies have triggered controversy on numerous occasions, and he's even been accused of being racist. However, his management during the coronavirus pandemic and his municipal environmental policy have earned him nationwide recognition.

Amidst all the controversy, in May of this year, Palmer decided to part ways with the Green Party following a scandal involving the use of the N-word at a migration conference in Frankfurt. Previously, his membership had been suspended due to other controversial statements.

The Free Voters Association (FWV) and the Free Voters party, two different entities

Informing the German Press Agency, Thomas Hölsch clarified that the FWV has no connection to the Free Voters party. The Free Voters Association, founded in the 1950s, had attempted to protect the name "Freie Wähler" from possible confusion with the Free Voters party in 2010. The Nuremberg-Fürth Regional Court, however, ruled against their request, which allowed the Free Voters party to continue using the term "Freie Wähler" in the future.

Palmer found support from Thomas Hölsch, the Parliamentary Group Leader of the FWV, who expressed his belief that Palmer's ideals align well with their group and that they welcome diverse contributions for the local cause.

With his controversial past and departure from the Green Party due to a scandal, Boris Palmer now seeks solace in the independent Free Voters Association (FWV), whose primary focus is local issues and encourages varied perspectives.

Leveraging his influence and commitment to community development and environmental concerns in Tübingen, Palmer hopes to maintain his presence in local politics while appealing to a broader spectrum of voters who share his values through the FWV.
