Ex-DFB talent Werner finds no prospects in England; England offers no future for him.
London, England - Timo Werner's stint with Tottenham Hotspur concludes as the club declines to permanently sign him
Tottenham Hotspur has decided against making Timo Werner's loan signing permanent, a move that was widely anticipated. The London club has confirmed this decision accompanied by other player departures. The 29-year-old striker is set to return to Bundesliga club RB Leipzig initially, although sources suggest he might not remain there for long.
Tottenham had borrowed Werner, a former national player, since January 2024. His tenure with the club will end in May 2025, signifying his return to Leipzig as his association with Tottenham comes to a close. However, it seems doubtful that he will find a long-term future with Leipzig either, according to information from German press agency dpa.
The prospect of a new beginning for Werner in the United States has emerged. With Leipzig willing to accept a reduced transfer fee, the striker may seek a fresh challenge away from his former teams Leipzig and Chelsea. His contract with Leipzig extends until 2026. During his time at Tottenham, Werner netted three goals in 41 games.
Werner recently stirred controversy after Tottenham's Europa League final victory against Manchester United. He posted an Instagram photo of himself wearing the winner's medal, stating, "As I said, I came here to win titles." However, Werner did not feature in the squad for the final. Instead, Tottenham included Mathys Tel, a player on loan from Bayern Munich, in their competitive lineup for the knockout phase of the competition.
Werner's last performance for Tottenham came in late February, when he entered as a substitute for eight minutes during a match against Manchester City. Recent comments made by coach Angelos Postecoglou shed light on Werner's thigh injury, while earlier in December, Postecoglou criticized Werner's attitude publicly.
Towards the height of his career in the summer of 2020, Werner joined Chelsea for €53 million, before returning to Leipzig for €20 million two years later in January 2024. However, durable success eluded him once again, resulting in another separation in January 2024 (dpa).
While Werner is headed back to RB Leipzig following Tottenham's failure to buy him outright, his lingering desire to remain in England has caught the attention of clubs such as West Ham United and Fulham, who are considering him as a potential addition for the upcoming transfer window (1, 2, 3, 4).
