Ex-Chairman of the PP in Zamora, Dionisio García Carnero, has passed away.

Dionisio García Carnero, a prominent figure in Spanish politics and former senator of the Popular Party (PP), has passed away at the age of 70. His death on July 18, 2025, has left a void in the political landscape, particularly in the region of Zamora where he served as a senator from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2004 to 2019.

García Carnero began his political career as a councilor in the Zamoran town of Benavente and later served as vice-president of the Province of Zamora. He rose through the ranks, becoming the president of the PP in Zamora from 1996 to 2004 and again from 2000 to 2004.

Leaders of the Popular Party have expressed their sadness over his passing. Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, the president of the Popular Party of Castile and León and president of the Junta, described García Carnero as "a friend and reference" of the PP. Similarly, the national president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has described him as a "reference" of the political formation of Zamora.

The members of New Generations of Zamora have also expressed their condolences, highlighting his "commitment, experience, and public service vocation". They described him as an "exemplary, senator, and tireless defender of democratic values".

García Carnero's political career was not without controversy. In 1999, he was indicted in the 'Zamora Case' and resigned from his senator position. However, his colleagues have emphasised his contributions to the party and his re-election in 2004 as evidence of the public's continued support.
