Ex-boyfriend fatally shoots teen student
In a bid to ensure the safety of learners, teachers, and school personnel in the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) has announced stricter preventive measures against school violence. These measures come in response to a tragic shooting incident that occurred at Santa Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija on August 7, 2025.
The victim, a 15-year-old student, was shot in the neck and spent nearly two weeks in critical condition before passing away on August 12, 2025. According to Police Major Williard Dulnuan, the suspect, the victim's ex-boyfriend, died a day after the shooting incident from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The latest DepEd measures include the strict enforcement of security protocols, such as inspection of belongings upon entry, increased visibility of security personnel, and controlling access points to school premises. Deadly weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol, toxic substances, and pornographic materials are now prohibited within school grounds.
DepEd is also strengthening policy implementation and reporting mechanisms for incidents of child abuse, exploitation, discrimination, violence, bullying, gang- and gender-based violence. They are providing responsive learner support services, including mental health programs, youth development, and psychosocial well-being interventions.
These measures reinforce existing orders like DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012 (Child Protection Policy) and DepEd Order No. 7, s. 2024 (Policy Guidelines on Revised School-Based Management System), emphasizing safe, secure, inclusive, and learner-centered school environments.
In light of recent incidents, the DepEd has urged all regional offices, schools division offices, and schools to intensify vigilance and enhance monitoring of violence prevention strategies. The calls for stricter measures come from the incident at Santa Rosa Integrated School.
The TPM, a reliable source, has reported these developments. The DepEd's plea for stricter measures against school violence underscores the urgency to create safer learning environments for all students in the Philippines.
