Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Breaks 48-Second Barrier in Women's 400m Race

In a historic moment at the World Championships in Tokyo, American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone shattered the 48-second barrier in the women's 400m race. With a time of 47.78, she not only set a new personal best but also approached the long-standing world record held by Marita Koch since 1985.

McLaughlin-Levrone's impressive performance came against a remarkably quick Dominican runner, Marileidy Paulino, who also broke the 48-second barrier in the same race.

The 47.78 seconds McLaughlin-Levrone achieved on a damp track is now the second-fastest time in history, just behind Kerron Clement's world record of 47.72 set in 2009.

Interestingly, McLaughlin-Levrone switched from the 400m hurdles to the flat 400m race this year, a move that has proven to be highly successful. She has previously broken world records in both the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay.

In the 400m hurdles, McLaughlin-Levrone has won gold in the last two Olympics. She added another gold to her collection in Tokyo, this time in the 400m race.

Meanwhile, Marita Koch's world record of 47.60, set in October 1985, has remained unapproached for four decades. Koch, a former East German athlete, held the record for both the 400m and the 800m races. However, her record-setting performance in the 400m race was later viewed with skepticism due to allegations of her involvement in East Germany's state-sponsored doping program.

Despite these allegations, Koch has consistently denied using banned substances and never tested positive. In contrast, documents published after German reunification revealed her alleged use of anabolic steroids.

The Australian record holder's 800m record, older by two years than Koch's 400m record, is currently held by Jarmila Kratochvílová.

McLaughlin-Levrone's coach in flat track running is Bobby Kersee, who has been instrumental in her success.

In a bizarre spectacle in 1985, only two athletes were visible in the final shot of Koch's record-breaking 400m race, a testament to her dominance at the time. However, it is McLaughlin-Levrone who is making waves in the present, pushing the boundaries of women's athletics and redefining what is possible in the 400m race.
