Everton manager David Moyes expresses dissatisfaction following the team's missed penalty at Elland Road.
In the opening weekend of the 2025 Premier League season, Leeds United emerged victorious against Everton, thanks to a controversial penalty decision that sparked debate among fans and managers alike.
The penalty was awarded to Leeds United after a VAR review, with referee Chris Kavanagh confirming that Everton's captain, James Tarkowski, had leaned into the ball with his arm. This handball decision was upheld by the VAR, and the penalty was not deemed controversial by official sources.
Lukas Nmecha, one of Leeds United's eight summer signings, stepped up to take the crucial spot-kick, securing a 1-0 win for his new team. Nmecha's goal against Everton marked his first important contribution for the Yorkshire club, having joined on a free transfer.
Everton's boss, David Moyes, expressed his disappointment with the performance of the referees during the weekend, including the penalty decision against his team. Moyes stated that he did not understand how a penalty could be given unless a player's hand was cut off.
Leeds United's boss, Daniel Farke, praised Nmecha's performance and revealed that he almost took the ball away from the substitute before he scored the winning penalty. Farke described Leeds United's performance against Everton as outstanding, with the team dominating for long periods, having nearly 70% possession and 21 shots.
Despite the controversy, Nmecha's goal was a significant moment in the young striker's career. Having struggled with injuries in his last two seasons in the Bundesliga, this goal marked a fresh start for Nmecha in England. Moreover, Nmecha has won caps for Germany's national team, highlighting his potential as a valuable addition to the Leeds United squad.
