Events in Bremerhaven will be under lockdown for enhanced safety measures
In a move that has sparked controversy, the city of Bremen has ordered protective vehicle barriers for major events, priced at 2.8 million euros. Initially, these mobile barriers were only planned for events in Bremen, leaving Bremerhaven out of the equation.
This decision has been met with criticism from various quarters, with CDU member Marco Lübke expressing concern. He stated that it seemed no one had spoken to Bremerhaven about the decision, implying a lack of consultation. The SPD mayor of Bremerhaven, Melf Grantz, joined the chorus, asking the Bremen senator for the interior, Ulrich Maeruer (SPD), to consider Bremerhaven as well.
In a recent turn of events, the magistrate of Bremerhaven announced that around 900,000 euros will be made available for Bremerhaven, ensuring that the city will receive its share of the protective elements. The total cost of the protective elements for both Bremen and Bremerhaven remains at 2.8 million euros.
The protective elements, designed to prevent attackers from driving into crowds at major events, could potentially be used at Bremerhaven's Christmas market. The order for these protective elements was made at the beginning of the month.
However, it is important to note that the search results do not contain specific information about the funding allocated for vehicle barriers in Bremerhaven or the timeline for their implementation.
On a positive note, Bremerhaven is set to benefit from a separate initiative. The HY.City.Bremerhaven hydrogen project received funding of 5.5 million euros from the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport. This project includes a hydrogen production facility and refueling station for heavy vehicles and fuel cell buses, with full operation planned in March 2025 after a short test run.
The resolution of the controversy surrounding the vehicle barriers appears to have been amicable, according to Melf Grantz. The issue, it seems, has been addressed, ensuring that both Bremen and Bremerhaven will be protected at major events.
