Take a Seat, Theatre Lovers! A Wild Ride with Nikolai Kolyaada Awaits

Ural playwright Nikolai Kolyaada is an unyielding force to be reckoned with, especially when it comes to his beloved "Kolyaada-Plays" festival. This maverick has announced that he'll take the show on the road to his dacha if the bigwigs in Yekaterinburg can't pony up the dough.

In atypical fashion, Kolyaada took to his social media platforms to spill the beans. The festival typically requires 5-9 million rubles to pull off, but those figured are a bridge too far for our brave playwright, so they launched a fundraising campaign on the "Planet" website.

The gods of government weren't exactly throwing money at the project. Kolyaada shared that they received a grant from the Sverdlovsk region, but they were stonewalled when trying to secure 3 million rubles. The high-priced endeavor include 12 artists from Mongolia, whose plane tickets alone will set them back around 1 million rubles. With grit and gusto, Kolyaada assured us that the festival will go on, rain or shine, for better or for worse, and maybe even more entertaining at his Logino dacha.

In a deadly serious letter to the acting governor of Sverdlovsk region, Denis Pasler, Kolyaada threw in a Hail Mary pass by begging for a helping hand. To the delight (and likely relief) of our playwright, the authorities soon came through, funding the arrival of students-artists from neighboring countries. The flight for the Mongolian troupe will be covered through the Ministry of Culture and the Drama Theater, leaving Kolyaada with one less worry to carry.

The "Kolyaada-Plays" festival is scheduled to run from June 20 to 30 in Yekaterinburg. With 24 plays in the main and competitive programs, the performances will take center stage at YTZ, Theater of Puppets, Chamber Theater, "Kolyaada-Theater", Museum of Underground, and more. The full schedule of events will be revealed in the near future.

All performances will feature plays based on the works of Ural playwrights, students, and graduates of the "Literary Creativity" department of EGTI.

Previously, we reported that Kolyaada found himself in a pickle when a call from Moscow tried to strongarm him into dropping Oleg Yagodin from his plays in exchange for a tour in Moscow. He stood his ground, declaring that he'd rather skip the tour than compromise his artistic integrity.
