Event promoting unity against racism and advocating for diversity: sports and cultural gathering called MATIS
On September 20, the city of Marburg will host the 10th annual MATIS event, a sports and cultural celebration organised by the African Students' Association (ASV) e.V. and the city itself. The event, titled "10 Years MATIS, 10 Years of Sports Against Racism and For Diversity", promises a day filled with intercultural exchange, sports tournaments, and cultural performances.
The sports event will take place at the Marburg Georg-Gaßmann Stadium from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Football and volleyball tournaments will be held, with each team participating required to have at least two nationalities represented. The tournaments aim to emphasise the joy of movement, sporting fairness, and the togetherness of people from different nationalities.
As the day turns to evening, the MATIS Cultural Night will begin at St. Martin-Haus, Waidmannsweg 11, from 8 pm. The night will start with live music from African sounds, followed by a traditional and modern African fashion show. An international buffet will be available during the Cultural Night, with admission being free.
Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies emphasises the importance of the event: "Sports connect people across borders. MATIS is an outstanding example of how we in Marburg can set a strong signal against racism and for diversity through joint commitment."
Fairness awards will be given out this year to highlight the importance of respectful interaction. The event is open for public participation, and teams can still register for the tournament with a registration fee of 35 euros.
