Event: Kristen Michal Welcomes Ex-Premiers at Yearly Luncheon

The annual lunch of former Estonian prime ministers, a traditional social gathering held ahead of Estonia's Restoration of Independence Day, took place on Tuesday at the Estonian Knighthood House in Toompea. Hosted by the current prime minister, Kristen Michal, the event was attended by several former leaders, including Kaja Kallas, Andrus Ansip, Siim Kallas, Mart Laar, Juhan Parts, Jüri Ratas, Andres Tarand, and Tiit Vähi.

Although the event is primarily cordial, some former prime ministers provided economic advice and policy recommendations regarding Estonia's present challenges. Key points of economic advice included:

  • Lowering the tax burden to stimulate economic growth, as suggested by some attendees.
  • Addressing inflation concerns: Jüri Ratas emphasized the need to slow inflation, noting that rapid price increases combined with wage growth have created significant inflationary pressure that citizens struggle to endure.

These insights reflect a cautious approach to balancing economic stimulation with inflation control.

Besides economic topics, the event also linked symbolically to Estonia’s independence restoration—with the lunch acting as part of wider celebrations marking Estonia’s sovereignty, further involving speeches and commemorations by political figures on August 20.

No detailed, formal economic policy proposals were published from the lunch; the recommendations were shared mostly in the form of personal views and guidance in the social setting of the event.

Notably absent from the gathering were two other living former prime ministers, Mart Siimann (1997-1999) and Taavi Rõivas (2014-2016).

Early attendees were given a guided tour of the historic building before the lunch began. During the event, Andres Tarand stated that excessive regulations are currently hindering the development of the economy. Juhan Parts recommended that the government consider cuts in state budget discussions as a means to address economic challenges.

Kristen Michal, the host of the event, stated that the advice of former prime ministers was worth listening to. The annual lunch of former Estonian prime ministers serves as a unique opportunity for current leaders to seek guidance from their predecessors and forge a sense of continuity in governance.
