Event Cancellation: Münster's CSD (Christopher Street Day) Celebration to Proceed as Planned
Unbridled Chatter: CSD Münster Stands Resolute Amidst Stirring Apprehensions
Amidst a surging wave of hostilities towards queer events across Germany, Münster readies itself for this year’s Christopher Street Day (CSD). While happenings in other cities such as Gelsenkirchen necessitated cancellation due to safety concerns, Rebecca Broermann, the CSD Münster spokesperson, maintains an overall optimistic outlook in a recent interview.
"Münster, fortunately, maintains its own identity," Broermann conveys in our conversation. Whilst unsettling trends in the treatment of queer individuals can be observed here, they are significantly less prominent. The city is cognizant of this advantage, acknowledging its privilege. At present, there are no imminent dangers leading up to the CSD on August 30th. However, the organizing team reads for potential short-term scenarios. For some time now, a recurring phenomenon has been the targeted video recording and photography of participants by known anti-queer individuals at the fringes of public events. In addition, the number of radical comments under queer posts on social media is escalating.
Exchanging insights with other CSD groups, such as via CSD Germany e.V., they routinely hear about tense situations in other cities. In some urban centers, counter-demonstrations are intentionally registered. In the eastern part of Germany, the climate is unmistakably deteriorating. There, the CSD often still retains a distinctly political character, reminding more powerfully of the movement's genesis, like the Stonewall uprising of 1969. "If we had the availability, we would visit and bolster all these CSDs through our presence," says Broermann.
The CSD in Münster is planned unwaveringly for August 30th. The organizers are in close communication with Münster’s police. The support of queer commissioners, Barbara Winkler and Rebecca Nockemann, is vital to the planning process. In an upcoming meeting, the security measurements will be further defined. "We are cognizant that every CSD can be jeopardized. But we also champion the notion that, in these times, every CSD that transpires has become all the more significant," declares Broermann.
What are you fretting about?
In Pforzheim, the right-wing organization "Störtrupp Süd" has advocated for a CSD counter-demonstration under the slogan “For traditional values," while Wetzlar has seen "Die Heimat” - NPD successor organization - call for a counter-demonstration as well. Last year in Gelsenkirchen, the CSD was abruptly terminated at the last minute due to a "vague danger situation." The motives of those who endeavour to prevent or disrupt the CSD might be as ambiguous. If hundreds converge to celebrate, advocate for recognition, and do so in a vibrant, joyous, imaginative, and peaceful manner, what could be amiss?
Why necessitates the presence of the police for such events to ensure that no untoward incidents occur? Those who grow agitated at a rainbow flag or envision the collapse of Western civilization in the presence of trans* individuals might have the most considerable issue with themselves. If, in fact, it's about our “traditional values," no problem, they were even set down for such situations - it’s called the Basic Law. A read-through is recommended! I wish Münster a splendid, vibrant, animated, noisy, cheerful, and, above all, peaceful CSD with clear skies on August 30th!
